This past weekend, Bongiovanni Racing made its return to Epping, New Hampshire for the NHRA New England Nationals. New England Dragway is the site of Anthony Bongiovanni’s first national event win in Super Stock, which came in 2018. The team was on track this weekend with Anthony driving in Stock and Super Stock and Michelle Bongiovanni making a return to driving in her 2008 Super Stock Cobra Jet.

Anthony got things going with his 2010 Micro Strategies-backed Cobra Jet in Stock and he made the Class final, but a -.006 redlight cost him the trophy. In Super Stock, Anthony qualified 18th with an 8.888 elapsed time, while Michelle slipped into the 7th qualifying spot after running 8.76 in her supercharged Ford Mustang.

Both Anthony and Michelle were rock solid in round one, grabbing wins in all three cars. Anthony defeated Jack Matyas in Stock and Eddie Chin in a close Super Stock match-up. Michelle used a fantastic .002 light and 8.92 elapsed time to best Bill Arpine who was driving a 2005 Chevy Cobalt.

Round two didn’t lead to the results Anthony hoped for, as he lost to event runner-up John Shaul in Stock and Greg Gay in Super Stock with an 8.99 break out on his 9.00 dial-in. Michelle, however, was victorious over multi-time champion Anthony Bertozzi. Bertozzi was going for it, but he came up with a -.002 redlight, while Michelle was .042 and ran 8.84 at 151 mph. Ironically, Bertozzi won a recent final against our own Anthony Bongiovanni.

While she was driving well, unfortunately Michelle lost in the next round to fellow Division 1 competitor Joe Lisa, who was better on the tree and forced Michelle into a breakout.

“It was really fun getting back to racing,” said Michelle. “I was excited to run in the 8s and go a few rounds. We’ve had great luck at this track with my dad winning the nationals a few years ago, so we’ll always have those memories. It’s a good feeling to win a few rounds, especially since I haven’t been able to race as often as I used to.”

Bongiovanni Racing will return to action July 15-18 at the NHRA JEGS Sportsnationals in Columbus, Ohio.
