Bongiovanni Racing kicked off the 2021 drag racing season at the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Lucas Oil Drag Racing event at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, LA. This was the first in a three-race swing, which will take them from deep in the Bayou to Gainesville and then Bradenton, Florida.

After a long winter break, driver Anthony Bongiovanni took the reins of his Micro Strategies and Optima Batteries-backed Ford Performance Cobra Jet Mustangs, competing in Stock and Super Stock.

Bongivanni qualified 7th in Stock and 15th in Super Stock, running 8.79 and 8.78 respectively. “I was pleased with the performance of both cars,” said Bongiovanni who lost tight races in the Second round in both Stock and Super Stock, but was able to score a win in Stock Class eliminations.

“This is the first race and both cars ran consistently in the 8s at over 150 mph. We have a bunch of NHRA and NMCA events ahead, so we’re looking forward to a fun and successful season. We’re always learning and we came away with the data that’s necessary to help us improve.”

Bongiovanni had the quickest F/SA entry and he used the power to reach the Class final where he raced NHRA standout Gary Emmons. Emmons redlighted, while Bongiovanni nailed a quick 8.80 elapsed time at 153.75 mph to take the win.

“It was a nice win and it’s great to take home another Wally trophy,” said Bongiovanni. “Gary is a tough competitor and I was surprised he redlighted.”

The team will compete this coming weekend at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Gainesville Raceway, stay tuned for more results.
